Microsoft Announces the Surface 3, A Low Cost Surface Option

Every since the Surface 2 faded into the digital sunset there has been a clamoring for a low cost Surface option.  Many thought that this would be a Surface Mini which by all indications was pulled at the last minute.  Today however the waiting seems to be over.  Microsoft has just announced the all new Surface 3, a low cost option in the Surface family starting at only $499, a full $300 less than the entry level Surface Pro 3.  The new Surface 3 is available for pre-order now and will ship on May 5th.  The key difference between the Surface 3 and the older Surface 2 is that the former runs Windows 8.1, full version.  This is not an RT build.  Further, you will get upgraded to Windows 10 for free when it is released later this summer.

Next Windows 10 for Phone Build Covers The Entire Range of Lumia Devices

According to a blog post by Gabe Aul, if you own a Lumia device you will likely have the next Windows 10 for Phone preview available on your device.  The news is certainly welcome to everyone who was disappointed by the limited number of devices the original preview was available for in January.  That seems to be resolved thanks to the partition stitching process that had to be resolved on many devices and within the next couple of weeks we should see a new build.

Microsoft and Samsung Expand Relationship to Pre-Install Office Apps on Android Tablets

Building on the announcements that they made at Mobile World Congress, Microsoft and Samsung today have announced a furthering of their relationship which will include the pre-install of Microsoft Office apps on Samsung Android-based tablets.  The announcement, while not a complete surprise, is good news for Samsung devices users as they will get these apps and the impact of this is both for consumers and businesses.  While I have been quite critical of how Google themselves had played with Microsoft, it is clear that Samsung sees the value of a relationship between the two companies even after a contentious legal battle.  While I’m not sure this is all kiss-and-make-up, it certainly is a step in the right direction.

Windows 10 for Phone to Support USB Mass Storage and USB Type-C

When it comes to Windows 10 for Phone, we are going to see a whole lot of improvements around USB support in the release coming this summer.  At the WinHEC event in China, the company outlined how they are going to be changing the way USB works on the platform and they are all positives.  First and perhaps most importantly is the support for USB Type-C, the new standard in USB connectors.  Apple as you may know recently announced a new MacBook that only has a USB Type-C connector for everything: Power, Display, etc.  Some didn’t take kindly to it but now that Microsoft has pushed support for it into Windows 10, it’s another indicator that this is the connection type of choice in the future.  The benefits are clear as Type-C has far more power and potential functionality than the current connection, Type-A for those that are curious.

Windows 10 for Phones Minimum Hardware Requirements Revealed by Microsoft

The WinHEC event in China has been a big event with a lot of news about the release of Windows 10 this summer and, for the first time, the hardware requirements for Windows 10 for PC, Tablets and Windows 10 for Phones.  The minimum specifications do have some interesting tidbits in the information but equally not a huge change from Windows Phone 8.1.  Perhaps the biggest change is the screen sizes that Windows 10 for Phones will run on as well as the minimum memory requirements based on the screen sizes of those devices.

Windows 10 To Launch This Summer for PC, Tables and Phones

In a post on the Windows Blog at Microsoft, the company has committed to Windows 10 being released this summer for PCs, Tablets and Phones.  It is the first solid commitment they have made other than “Coming in 2015” and gives an good indication that the company feels they are making good progress on the release thanks to the help of Windows Insiders.  While no specific date was provided in the post from Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of Operating Systems at Microsoft, it is does mean that we will likely see Windows 10 on our devices within 6 months.
