Google Releases Google Chrome Update for Android

Google has released an updated version of the Google Chrome browser for Android, bringing a host of updates, fixes and a few new features.  The build is version 46.0.2490.76 for those keeping score at home and it should be hitting the Google Play Store and your device in the next few days.  While the bulk of this update is fixes and other improvements, there is an improved image loading by allowing Chrome to negotiate with the web server to provide the best image over HTTP based on the bandwidth available and the device type.  Sounds geeky right?  It is and it is certainly something that developers would have to include on their sites but the key is that Google is positioning Chrome to be able to handle this without any user intervention once it is enabled.

How To Cast Your Chromebook To Your Chromecast

While we often think of the Chromecast as a media and streaming tool, it actually has a lot of versatility when it comes to your computing needs. The most common use of course is to show a presentation from Slides via a Chromecast on your Android phone or tablet. However you can easily show the content of your Chrome browser or your Chromebook to a Chromecast device with one simple extension in Chrome.

In this How To I’ll show you what you need to get all of this setup which is pretty simple. Once you have it setup you can easily show your Chromebook’s browser or desktop and if you are on a PC, you can show a tab in your Chrome browser.

Chrome 45 Brings Better Speed and Memory Management

Google has begun rolling out an updated version of Chrome that promises to bring speed improvements and memory management improvements.  Chrome 45, for those keeping score at home, is starting to hit users of Chrome now (Chrome OS has already been updated to Build 45) so if you are using the browser on your PC, go to Settings>About to force the browser to look for the update.

In a blog post on the Chrome blog, Google points out that they have continued to focus on speed improvements in the browser.  The first area was improving the “continue where you left off option” in the browser.  This lets you restore tabs when you relaunch Chrome.  Now the browser is a bit smarter about how it restores these tabs.  Now tabs are restroed from the most to least recently viewed so you get to the fresher (and likely more important data) faster.  Also, Chrome can detect if your computer is running low on resources and will stop restoring the rest of your tabs to save memory.  You can of course restore them later if you’d like.

Chrome for Android Updated with Inline Word Searches

Google has released a nice update to the Chrome browser for Android devices with several improvements and new features.  One of the new features is the ability to tap a word on a webpage and Google will provide you information about that word or phrase at the bottom of the screen.  It is a handy little feature, especially if you run across a word you aren’t sure of the meaning or usage.  This update, version 43.0.2357.92 on Android phones for those keeping score at home, is available now and includes several other updates that make it a worthwhile download.  If you haven’t tried Chrome on your Android tablet or phone, now is a good time to give it a go. I personally have it set as my default browser on all my devices as it is pretty solid and easy to use.
