A new update to the Google Backup & Sync app for MacOS and Windows 10 is rolling out that brings a lot of fixes and a few new features. The updated build is version 3.39 for those keeping score at home. This new build was released on February 1st so it is likely that you already have it installed as Google pushes updates to Backup & Sync behind the scenes.
For those who use Network-Attached Storage (NAS), this update is an important one for you as it is finally supported. You can now backup files and folders stored on a NAS to your Google Drive. The folder has to be mounted and you will be able to add a NAS folder from the My Computer section of Google Backup & Sync.
Another new feature is the ability to exclude the Apple Photos Library metadata from syncing for you MacOS users. This too is found in the My Computer section of the Backup & Sync preferences when you select to back up your photos and videos. There is a new “Back up Apple Photos Library metadata” option which you can uncheck to prevent it from syncing.
In addition to these new features, there are several fixes in this update according to the Release Notes:
- Introduced more safeguards to protect from database corruption.
- Fixed issues where files were locked when saving from Adobe and Microsoft Office applications on Windows.
- Fixed an issue where after upgrading to Windows Fall Creators Update, Backup and Sync was not able to locate Documents, Desktop, and other folders.
- Fixed a broken link in “Can’t sync” error dialogs.
- Fixed an issue where Backup and Sync crashed with error 6EF4E317 when trying to sync.
- Fixed an issue where users were erroneously signed out.
- More bug fixes and performance improvements.
If you haven’t tried out Google Backup & Sync, it is a download you can make from your Google Drive account. Just tap the Settings (gear) icon and you will see the option to download and install it on your Mac or Windows PC.
