For the Android faithful who get frustrated by the use of older versions of the platform, take heart. The problem is also shared by Microsoft Windows.
StatCounter has released their monthly report on Windows version usage globally and while Windows 10 has made gains, it still trails the now 8 year old Windows 7. Windows 7 commanded 43.99% of all Windows-based internet traffic in September while Windows 10 jumped up to 39.3%. That is up from 37.87% in August 2017.
Taking other Operating Systems into consideration, Windows as a whole remains second in overall market share behind Android. Android commands a 39.81% share while Windows sits at 36.34%. For Windows, that’s a

slight .24% increase over the previous month. iOS remains in third position at a distant 12.97%, some 23.3 percentage points behind Windows. MacOS is further behind at 5.24%.
With the current trajectory of Windows 10, it is possible that it could be the most used version of Windows by the end of the year. It is a stretch but possible. Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in January 2015 and extended support, which impacts enterprises mostly, ends in January 2020. That may seem a bit away but for large organizations who need to migrate thousands of devices, it is a lengthy process. As more corporations move to Win10, we should see the market share numbers continue to climb through the rest of 2017 and early 2018.
