Good news this morning for those who have the Sony Xperia X or Xperia X Compact: Android Oreo is on its way. The company has released firmware version 34.4.A.0.364 for both devices, bringing Oreo to the 2016 phones as well as a handful of other updates to the devices.
Along with the update comes the January 2018 Android Security Update patch so you will be protected against Spectre and Meltdown after you update your phone. There are also new features to the camera app and overall performance improvements to both devices.
I reviewed the Sony Xperia X Compact late in 2016 and it is a solid little phone. And by little, I mean the 4.6″ display creates a small package phone but with a lot of punch. Essentially the Xperia X is the same phone, but with a slightly larger 5″ screen. Internally, they are the same.
Sony, while perhaps slower than desired, has done a great job of getting Oreo out to their various devices. They have also been one of the few who have taken on the effort to update late 2016/early 2017 models to the latest version of Oreo. I applaud them for it as the X and X Compact are still great phones, not just a little bit greater.
Look for the Oreo update over the coming days but it could be a week or two before everyone sees it. By-the-by, if you are wanting to pick up the Xperia X Compact, it is down to $319 on Amazon. The Xperia X is $235.
