Earlier this month, Razer announced at CES that the Razer Phone would be the first mobile device to support Netflix HDR as well as Dolby 5.1 audio. The update to make that happen is now rolling out.
The update brings support for Netflix HDR but there are a lot of other things in this 249MB update that owners of the phone will want to get. First, it comes with the January Android Security Update which has fixes against the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. Second, the update includes updates to the rear cameras on the device.
After you get this latest update to your Razer Phone, you will want to also make sure you get the latest version of the Razer Camera app in the Play Store which can take advantage of the underlying updates in this firmware update.
If you are hoping that this update would be the Android Oreo update for the phone, your hopes will be dashed. This update is still based on Android Nougat 7.1.1. Razer is committed to getting their Oreo update out on the phone this quarter according to their support page.
You should see an update hit your Razer over the course of the next few days. You can, of course, manually check for the update by going to Settings>About Phone. As with most any phone update, it is rolling out in phases so don’t be too upset if you don’t see it immediately.
If you are interested in picking up a Razer Phone for yourself, it is currently $699 on Amazon.
