Nokia has been clear that all of their current line up of devices, the Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8, would be receiving an update to Android Oreo. The question, as is always the case with manufactures, was when that would happen. Now we know and it is this year.
In an interview today, HMD Global’s General Manager for ANZ (Australia and New Zealand), Mark Trundle confirmed that the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 will get getting the Oreo update before the end of the year. As for the Nokia 8, the Android Oreo update is already in a limited rollout.
It is certainly good news and should put other manufactures on notice. Nokia isn’t available in every region or every country of the world so admittedly, it is a bit easier for them to roll out these big upgrades. Still, they have kept to their word and are going to be upgrading not just their flagship but also their budget entry. It also means they have spent the time and effort to engineer their Android Oreo updates for their phones, something other manufactures tend to be picky about doing (translation: mid-market to flagships only).
Here in the US, the only real Nokia option has been the 6. It is available for as low as $179 on Amazon ($229 if you don’t want the lock screen adverts). The other Nokia devices are available on Amazon but will have limited LTE or GSM coverage. It is expected that over the course of 2018 that we will see more of their devices here in the US.
With the final quarter of 2017 starting on Sunday, the wait won’t be long now for Nokia owners.
