The second game of the Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Rio, has been updated for Android phones and tablets with an new coin bonus for completing 2 or 3 stars on each level. The new coin bonus is aimed to make it quicker and easier for players to get power-ups and other bonus features in the game without necessarily having to spend real money. The update is build 2.4.0 for those keeping score at home and even if you have been playing the game for a while, it is worth the update to get some new and improved power-ups.

The way the new coin bonus works in Angry Birds Rio is simple. When you complete a level and gain 2 or 3 stars (based on how efficiently you eliminate the rogue monkeys (not pigs)) you will get a coin bonus which is now incremented in a counter in the lower right corner of the game. You can then use those coins for power-ups such as more powerful birds, TNT to blow up levels with great effect amongst other things. The more coins you collect the more power-ups you can buy.
In addition to completing levels, coins are award for completing chapters in the game as well as coming back each day to play the game. In other words, Rovio has made it really easy to get a lot of coins fast in Angry Birds Rio.
That said, you can still spend real cash through in-app purchases to get power-ups and other bonus items faster.
Angry Birds Rio, released orginally in conjunction with the children’s movie Rio, hasn’t gained the wide success of the original game or even some of the subsequent releases like Angry Birds Seasons or Angry Birds Star Wars I & II but as a fan of the franchise, I still find it to be a lot of fun and a great way to kill a few minutes (or hours).
This update is available now in the Play Store and it is a single build for phones and tablets.
